[UPDATE:All links to all templates and tutorials now up!] Side note: This post is pretty delayed, as explained. But its a post Ive been wanting to share for so long, hopefully inspire anyone who’s looking for party ideas. And now with my girl’s birthday looming, I thought the timing is pretty fitting So Im pretty much a sucker for party planning, particularly a kiddies party. Because kids know how to have fun! Always so open to the new experience – no matter how slow or shy they are to open up at first. The more colourful, sillier, active and inclusive it is for them, the betterSo I know I can put in the effort, and be assured that it will be enjoyed. Even more so for the birthday person in question, when I know it’s a theme they’re totally into right at the time. Like when my eldest daughter turned three in 2014, and was nuts about Dora the Explorer. Like really, really into it. Im talking about consulting Map throughout playtime. Map just knows where everything is,right? And Backpack was just the shiz when it came to anything we might need on our adventure in the backyard. (He’s like a Sports Billy bag, for those not in the Dora-know). And poor Whiskey(our dog) was Swiper the fox on more than one occasion. So having a Dora the explorer theme for her birthday party was no-brainer. And I really wanted to have the vibrant fiesta-explorer vibe to it that Dora so beautifully encapsulates. So colors, colours, colours, vibrant colors, is what I was after. And since doing the whole house was just going to end up crazy-expenso, I had focus areas instead: 1. The invites 2. Entrance/welcome area 3. Food table 4. Cake table 5. Kiddies table ( I don’t normally do table and chairs for kiddies this age, because they hardly even sit much at a party, but realised my kid was conditioned by school to have that setup, and very likely the rest of the kids her age are too. So we went with it. 6. Games/Activities What I did not focus on, much to my huge regret, was a photographer. Not even a buddy. ![]() There was just me and my little phone, where I randomly remembered to take a few shots in between playing hostess. This is mistake I vowed to never make again. So unfortunately, there are no awesome shots to share with you, Im afraid. Something I’ve clearly not gotten over. But this post is all about the ideas, here people. ? So lets get started! Play online games with Dora, Boots, and Swiper! Preschoolers will learn new spanish words, letter sounds, numbers, shapes, and more skills to help them get ready for. I have some dora party favours/toys etc, plates, hats, cups and table covers and Im making a dora cake. I also have baloons and streamers in 'dora colours'. I also have a dora pin the tail type game to play. Anyone have any other good dora theme ideas for 3yr olds? Especially for games or decorations. Play online dora games, bratz games and monster high games. ![]() ![]() The invites So I had two versions of this: the hand delivered version and the electronic copy version. Because somehow I cant just buy the freagin’ invites in the shop and use them. No, for some inexplicable reason, I must find a way to make things a little trickier, and up the effort-requirement on all things in life. Because life isn’t hard enough.Right? Jokes aside, I really just like personalised things. Also, all too often I don’t find things that match up to the way it looks in my head. (Also a reason why I don’t often go clothes shopping) So I drew a template for this little sucker right here. Hand delivered: Backpack holding Map, which is the actual invite That’s Backpack. And the Map you see there, nicely rolled up and sticking out on the side, is the actual invite. (A printed out version of the electronic one) Yes, this took some pain staking time to make, and I often lost my lus to finish making them, along with my will to live in the midst of it allHence, I only hand delivered five. But if you’ve got the stamina to make ’em yourself, I’ve been so kind as to share the. Now, am I not just so nice? Eh!;) The electronic version was easier. You see, I don’t have photo shop. Or any cool software that would have made light of my job. But long story short, here is the one I used. And to once more re-iterate how nice and awesome I am (ah-hem), click. Entrance/welcome area This is great way to get the kiddy guests psyched for what they are in for the moment they enter, and really helps set the tone for the party. Especially for a fiesta kind of setting, I think it totally sparks happy thoughts and party vibes. The entrance: Still mid-setup. But the only pic I got ? I used balloons *large colourful ones and one big Dora one) that I sourced from King Cake, along with: 1. Tissue paper pom-poms (Made by my super- duper creative friend, Olivia of.) 2. Estrella cookies (Star) as part of their take-home stash. It was meant for take-home, however I had one cute little muchkin of a guest who couldn’t help but go back for more throughout the party. I totally took it as a compliment, and am so glad she enjoyed it! This is why I make extras!(and try desperately to keep my hubby from eating those extras) For a how-to, go to. Glad to know my baking goods were in high demand! Table cloth– colourful and vibrant Dora plastic cloth. Totally re-usable, which is a great thing as little sister seems to be following suit on the Dora-fan vibes. King Cake, Merry Pack and Funky Bananas all stocked these table cloths, at round about the same price. Party packs were made to look like Backpack. Now, whilst I had every intention of adding straps to these packs to make it really look like Backpack. I had to be realistic, though. Often physically shaking the idea out my head: there was no way I was going to get it all done in time. I have not yet mastered time travel. I’ll let you know when I have. These took time, but I was happy with the end-result. Party packs: Not as visually appealing on film Also, they came out terrible on film.Like, really uncool. But in real-life they totally looked like Backpack. My girls are my litmus sticks: If they can immediately recognize who or what Ive just made, then my work here is done! ? The party pack’s “thank you” free printable labels I found over at I sourced the the paper bags from Merry Pak – if you haven’t heard of them, climb out from under that rock, and go enjoy some seriously awesome prices on stationary, party and catering goods to name a few. They really are awesome, and you may have to pry yourself out of there, as they have so much to see and choose from. I found the Backpack face template through Google, however, I had to painstakingly colour it in myself. ( I have no photoshop nor any other fancy software to help me with that) So, if you’re like me, then to save you all that wrist-slitting work, and because Im such a doll, here is a link to that, ready for you to use! You’re welcome! Everyone was rocking a Backpack These babies really took time and dedication to finish up. All the meticulous hand work that went in to it.I kept thinking, geeez, I need to get back into ass-kicking again, Im spending waaaay too much time doing these soft and cute thingsNothing wrong with soft ‘n cute crafts, don’t get me wrongI love itbut Im truly missing the balance these daysBut that’s another blog post entirely. I had two versions of these. The fabric painted one and the cut and paste one. To see the how-to,. And that cute little map peeking out over there? Don’t worry, not hand made. Im not that much of a sucker. The free printable template for Map on the outside (what you see there) can easily found on the Nickelodeon site over. Along with many of the other Dora templates. To see what I did on the inside for the actual map that the kids used, check it out over here.(watch this space). Author: Mother of two (and counting), pregnant with the third and have a sweet little angel in heaven. A very happy wifey, blogger, lover of life and laughter, a clumsy swimmer, loyal friend, Im funnier in my head than I actually am, I am a qualified HypnoBirthing Child Birth Educator, I get inexplicably excited about good food, baking & crafts. Although, I think baking and crafts are just trying to fill a void that my Kenpo and gym-rat days used to fill. Lastly, according to the rest of the world, I fix your printer. There are still terrible, exploitative free-to-play games on the market—more every day, in fact. But occasionally— occasionally—we get something.miraculous. We get a free-to-play game that doesn’t try to con players out of money or make the design intentionally boring in order to make those purchasable unlocks more exciting. Here, you’ll find a list of games so good the developers could’ve charged money (or, in some cases, did charge money) before going free-to-play. These aren’t just good free-to-play games, they’re good games, full stop. UPDATED: April 2017: Some games added ( EVE Online, etc.), some updated ( Path of Exile), some removed (shakes fist at Tribes: Ascend). It's been three or four years since I first wrote this list, and MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas) are still king of the free-to-play pile. Not only do they have a staggering number of users, but maintains the record for biggest e-sports prize on the planet: featured a prize pool of $20.7 million this year. If you've still never dipped your toe in the MOBA waters, just know that Dota 2 is the successor to the WarCraft III mod DOTA, or Defense of the Ancients, the grandpappy of the whole genre. Players pick a hero and battle it out against the other team, competing to bring down the enemy base by out-maneuvering foes with skillful tactics. Or, if you're like me, you pick a hero and mess something up five minutes in, and your entire team gets angry because they know you just lost them the game. ![]() And we can't mention Dota 2 without mentioning its counterpart,. League is yet another MOBA, again inspired by the original DOTA mod. So why choose League of Legends over Dota 2? Now we're getting into dangerous 'Mac versus PC' or 'Schwarzenegger versus Stallone' arguments—the type where nobody wins. The truth is you should just pick whichever one your friends are playing or whichever looks best to you, and jump in. The differences when you're starting are minimal—you probably won't even notice most until you've reached an advanced skill level in one or the other. If you want a free-to-play game done right, it's. To start with, it's one of the best action-RPGs in recent memory. Its convoluted class/leveling system gets talked about most, but the whole point-and-click-on-things-until-they-die aspect has a great feel to it, the loot drops are satisfying, and the world itself fascinating. But even more impressive is that developer Grinding Gear continues to add a staggering amount of content to the game each year. The game's sixth expansion, The Fall of Oriath, is due to release sometime in 2017, adding another entire act to the game's story. As I said: It's a pretty incredible action-RPG. Highly recommended for fans of click-click-click combat. Is proof that an excellent brand and/or aesthetic can make a game a hit, even if the game itself is lackluster. Your goal is to build and populate a Fallout Vault-Tec Vault and keep the survivors alive in the post-apocalypse. ![]() Rome wasn't built in a day, though, and your Vault's no different—this is one of those 'waiting'-style free-to-play games where you queue up some actions and then just let it sit for (real-world) hours as you wait for things to unfold. As I said: It's not an incredible game, but the Fallout hook is a lot of fun. The newly-released PC version is a hell of a lot prettier (and easier to navigate) than the mobile version. You'll hear some people refer to as an ' Overwatch clone,' and that's understandable—it's a hero-based shooter, with the same somewhat-cartoony aesthetic and even some ability overlaps, like the guy who wields a transparent blue shield. But Paladins is also its own thing. It was made by Hi-Rez (of Tribes: Ascend fame/infamy) and has a unique card-based loadout system, mix-and-match skins, and more. It's Overwatch-esque, sure, but also an excellent game in its own right—maybe a bit less balanced, and with fewer interesting champions. But for anyone who lacks the scratch to try out Overwatch or wants to give Blizzard's shooter a break, Paladins is a solid alternative. Like Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, and other physical collectible card games (CCGs) of old, your task in is to create the most advantageous deck and battle it against your opponent’s. The key difference? Hearthstone is made by Blizzard, and based off the Warcraft license. And it's pretty good, though it's suffered from growing pains lately. People seem more and more dissatisfied with the rate of card drops and other free-to-play aspects, as each new expansion makes the game a bit more expensive to play. It's also much harder to get into nowadays, given the number of cards in use, though Blizzard's at least taken some steps to address that issue. From what I can tell it’s still the most popular digital collectible card game though, regardless of how much its fans complain. If you're looking for a CCG to get into, Hearthstone's a good place to start. It's somewhat easy to write off as a Hearthstone knock-off—I mean, that seems to be the case, insofar as it's a CCG timed suspiciously to ride Hearthstone's coattails. But as far as knock-offs go, Elder Scrolls Legends actually seems pretty damned good. It has a bit more randomness built into it than Hearthstone, but also some excellent mechanics (lanes!) and a solid single-player offering. The game finally left beta in early 2017, and the expansion train is already rolling. If you're looking for a CCG that's still fresh and full of potential instead of weighted down by years of baggage, Legends is worth a try. I'm not sure how large the player base is, nor whether it'll stay active long-term, but again: As far as knock-offs go, it's a good effort. You're captain of the USS WhatsItsName. Your mission? Well, that's up to you. While has a lot of content even if you stick to developer-created missions, it's actually far more interesting due to The Foundry—a mission-building tool for players to create their own missions. Some players in Star Trek Online have recreated entire arcs from the TV shows using The Foundry, while others have crafted new stories for the Trek universe that rival the complexity of a plot you'd see on TV. It's an impressive effort and testament to the benefits of user-generated content—it's kept Star Trek Online alive long after the gaming community-at-large wrote the game off. For an MMO that’s actually friendly to its free-to-play users—almost amazingly so—try. It’s the classic case of “Game launches with subscription, game dies on the vine, developers go free-to-play, game doesn’t suck, game starts to revive. Sort of.” An action-heavy, ultra-hardcore MMO, Wildstar was supposed to be “the next big MMO,” the proverbial World of Warcraft killer. I don't think it's ever going to get there, but there's a dedicated core community keeping it on life support enough to wring some fun out of it. I'm a bit torn throwing on this list. As far as free-to-play MMOs goit's sort-of a bad deal. Free-to-play users have strict limitations on the ships they can pilot, the skills they can earn, and so on. It's “free-to-play” only by the most lenient definition of the term. But for a game that's traditionally been near-impossible for newcomers to get into, free-to-play might be a good thing. Once you get through its impenetrable spreadsheet-style interface you'll find EVE can be excellent, full of backroom politics and betrayals and friendships so strong they translate over to the real world. But that's only after you get past its spreadsheet-style interface. It's as fascinating as it is intimidating. If you've read any stories about EVE's amazing battles and wanted to check out the rest of the game for yourself without committing to a monthly subscription, now's your chance. WarCraft III was a fine real-time-strategy (RTS) game in its own right, but it was the custom games that really set it apart— Defense of the Ancients, for instance, which led directly to Dota 2/ Heroes of the Storm/ League of Legends. Perhaps hoping to replicate that success, Blizzard has made it entirely free for you to play any custom StarCraft II maps. All you have to do is and you can jump in. And if you’re curious about StarCraft proper, Blizzard’s also made a three-mission prologue titled available for free. The best free games on PC Money’s for suckers. This is a fact: you can play many amazing full games without ever pirating anything. You can play dozens of them, in fact, and some are so good you kind of wonder how the hell anyone sells anything anymore. While we all look away from that modestly-sized elephant, consider this: the array of free-to-play games on offer these days is truly bewildering, and you, being a time-challenged cog in the twenty-first century’s machine, have forgotten to type URLs that don’t begin with “facebook”. What to play? And where to find it? Here, in no particular order, are the best PC games you can play for free today. Killer Instinct A staple free download on Xbox One, Rare scrapper Killer Instinct is also available for zero dollars on PC. You’ll need to be using Windows 10 to run it (if you’re still holding out you should probably re-evaluate you general life priorities) and you won’t be able to get the full roster of fighters unless you spend some money, but the core game costs nothing. The best bit? You can fight Xbox One players on your monitors. Show the console scum who’s boss. Tera Rising Tera’s a K-poppy MMO, but stands out from its fantasy brethren with its non-targeting combat, skill-chaining and global politic system. It’s standard Asian stuff, really, even though it’s billed as the first proper action MMO. But it’s full-price for free, so worth looking at (provided you can stand the gratuitous Far East boob art). Aion Aion’s got a good reputation for being a top free PvP MMO, and there’s no denying it looks the part. Combat mechanics have always been something of an issue with critics: things can get repetitive. There’s a bunch of celestial angelic stuff going on here. If you’re looking for the most vaunted Asian F2P MMO around, you’ve found it. There are no subs, no account tiers and no purchase requirements. Fallen Earth Fallen Earth is a free post-apocalyptic MMO in which you play a clone striving to regain immortality. It’s completely stupid and a bit rubbish, but this is a massive game with some great action and more than enough MMOness to warrant the download. The Grand Canyon forms the central geographic location for Fallen Earth, which covers some 1,000 square kilometres of deep-fried wasteland. Rift Fantasy MMO Rift was a big deal when it launched, but the realities of the modern online game space soon turned it free. Choosing between 40 unique souls allows you to create your own class, with three souls available for use at any one time. Dynamic rift events drop heaps of baddies into the world, forcing you and fellow players to kill comprehensively. If you don’t, the evil things invade local towns and stop you progressing. There’s no questioning Rift’s status as a “good game”. The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot Ubisoft’s two main F2P plays are Ghost Recon Phantoms and a fantasy hack-n-slash, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot. The latter’s hook is that you create a castle full of traps with the intention of protecting your gold from other players. It’s certainly different, and there’s so much user-created content you could never see it all (even if it does get a tad samey). This is only just out of closed beta, so there’s a bunch of balancing still being done. DC Universe Online If it’s superheroes you want, DC Universe Online is “the shit”. If you sub you get access to the game’s extensive DLC catalogue, but you have to buy the packs if you’re playing for free. Check out the restrictions. The major upside, pretty obviously, is the DC character pantheon. APB Reloaded Few events in gaming’s history have been more spectacularly depressing than APB’s launch, but that was then. Much has changed since the first version appeared in 2010, and the current state is more GTA Online for PC than the original disaster. You take jobs, you kill for money, you fight opposing gangs. The character customisation is amazing and there’s enough back-story to drown in, should you so wish. Ghost Recon Phantoms Ubisoft’s F2P noob mixes trademark Ghost Recon cover mechanics and teamplay with some well considered free-to-play gubbins, making for one of the most exciting free releases on PC so far this year. Get your mates together, form a clan, waste your free smoke grenades and refuse to buy any more. It’s a genuinely good game. And it costs nothing. War Thunder War Thunder has to be one of the best-looking F2P games on PC right now. Armored vehicles, planes, naval fleets, Japan, America, Germany, the kitchen sink: it’s got it all. Available on PS4 as well as Mac and Linux, War Thunder offers cross-platform war set in WWII and Korea. With over 600 “historically accurate” aircraft and ground vehicles included and a focus on realistic simulation, you should at least take a look. World of Tanks In the world of tanks, and such a world evidently exists, World of Tanks is king. No other similar game allows players If you want to roll around in a metal box blowing people up in blown-up towns, this game is for you. There’s a reason it has 70 million registered users. Or is it 80 million? DOTA 2 Is LoL better? It matters as much as the colour of your pants. Nearly 13 million people played Valve’s MOBA in the last month, meaning it’s nothing if not popular. DOTA 2 features enough competitiveness, prize money and shouting youngsters to induce full-blown hippy cold sweats. Probably not for 40 year-olds, but different strokes. Smite Free-to-play MOBAs aren’t in short supply anymore, but Smite holds its head above the crowd. The main difference here compared to the likes of Heroes of the Storm and League of Legends is the player viewpoint, which allows you to play more like an action game. With more than 60 gods to master (in return for some payments, natch), you’ll be here for some time. Heroes of the Storm Blizzard’s F2P MOBA is easier to access than League of Legends (see the next entry), but the lack of complexity means there’s a lower highest tier of play. This is a great game using a wide array of characters from the Blizzard pantheon that’s guaranteed to result in at least a smattering of “fun”. That’s why you’re here, right? League of Legends Yes, is impenetrable, its community is a bunch of dicks and you need to play for thousands of hours to be any good at it in relative terms, but there’s no question that League of Legends has completely nailed MOBA. If you want to see what’s turning “the kids” on these days, Star Trek Online Getting on with Star Trek in general is an obvious prerequisite to being able to play this, but STO is more than game enough for nothing. The cartoon styling may not be for everyone, and there’s a huge amount of keys to get accustomed to (the combat involves stance-switching), so this may not be the free game you’re looking to grab for a quiet evening after work. It’s got space and land missions and was developed by Cryptic, so if you’ve been around a while you’ll know what to expect. Put it this way: there’s nowhere else to fight the Borg. Age of Conan: Unchained Conan’s been around since 2008, when it released in a broken mess and was roundly savaged as a result. A lot of the problems have been fixed since then, and this enormous, visually sumptuous game is now available for free. The F2P component is very generous, but it’d be worth subbing if you were heavily involved. Check out tiers. Hawken Hawken is a mech shooter that started off with promises of being The Next Big Thing and then sort of wasn’t. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth looking at, however, especially as now it’s It’s a bit “please buy a mech I’ll love you forever,” but someone’s got to get paid, I guess. If you’re finding yourself playing Titanfall just for the robot bit, then you should absolutely download it. Star Wars: The Old Republic One of the most expensive games ever made at its release in 2011 is now (sort of) free. It isn’t to everyone’s liking, and has been savaged easily as much as it’s been praised, but that the basic client costs nothing is kind of ridiculous. There are many catches to SWTOR’s F2P, however, such as not being able to sprint up to level 10 if you don’t pay (thanks, EA). You can pore over the perks granted to subs, but, regardless, Neverwinter Neverwinter crops up consistently on these lists, usually as a close second F2P MMO to LOTRO. The D&D RPG is completely free (although it does have something of a reputation for pay-to-win) and features the ability to create your own dungeons. Neverwinter is very much alive, with content updates and patches constantly adding to an already epic game.. Planetside 2 If you’re more far future than flowery fantasy, Planetside 2 is unavoidable. It’s large scale sci-fi combat on gigantic battlefields teeming with players, ships, lasers and death. There’s no charge. Base-building’s just been added, so, if you haven’t tried it yet, you should Team Fortress 2 This has to be the greatest F2P shooter ever made. It’s funny, stupid, brilliant and could keep you happy forever. It’s a great, great game. The cartoon style will never get old and the mix of classes and some incredible map design would make it essential even if there was a cover charge. An absolute must. Hearthstone If you haven’t started playing this yet there’s something wrong with you. The Blizzard card battler is available on both PC and mobile, and is far too addictive. The pay element comes in buying cards for your decks, but you can get on just fine without ever having to spend. Get it on PC. Then get it on tablet. Then play it forever. The Lord of the Rings Online LOTRO is the best F2P MMO on PC. There’s no question. It’s beautiful, has a range of content that puts it up there with any of its competitors and sports some of the most robust MMO mechanics in existence. If you’ve never played an MMO before, or you’re just looking to pretend to be a hobbit for a few hours, there is no excuse whatsoever: Path of Exile That Path of Exile is free is borderline criminal. You should have to pay for this ARPG. The notoriously gigantic skill tree alone is enough to download it, let alone the depth of the item combination mechanics and the fact it managed to out-Diablo Diablo III with withering ease. Free or not, Path of Exile is a horror masterpiece, and one of the best games currently on PC. You must play it. Players use slottable skill gems in Path of Exile as in most ARPGs, the difference here being that they level with play and have their own requirements for upgrading. The passive skill tree is immense. Combining gems and skills offers the sort of customization options that could keep you bogged down for years. Path of Exile sometimes feels more like EVE Online than Diablo. Path of Exile’s story is played out in Acts, and the game is often referred to as the spiritual successor to Diablo II. Players get PvP as well as PvE, and some PvP events can last for months. A current event is an Ambush and Invasion league with prizes and opportunities to contribute to the Child’s Play charity. If you complete all eight challenges in leagues you can win a t-shirt. And who doesn’t want that? Gameplay itself takes place on a wide variety of environments, from beaches to dungeons to forests. You have six classes to choose from, including the Witch, the Marauder and the Duelist. It’s got dual-gear set-ups, auto-equip and every item – including life and mana flasks – can be enchanted or elevated in rarity using a variety of orbs. It’s ridiculous, honestly. You’ll want to spend money on microtransactions out of guilt. Path of Exile offers so much for so little. It’s hardcore, but then so are you. Hi all, I'm currently in the proces (together with a friend) of making a draft drawing of a board game. We live quite far from eachother so we will have to exchange our sketches and drafts of this boardgame over email. And then provide input in the same manner. However we have not yet been able to find a PC program that will easily allow creation of basic gaming sketches - drawing the game board, printing it out on regular A4, easy re-arranging blocks/fields on the board - to for example add a field, delete a field etc. The problem with most programs - like photoshop is that they might be good for detailed design - but we need to have functional (hence ugly is quite alright) draft boards which we can exchange together with some design notes. Furtermore - if the program is also capable of keeping track of the game rules that we have made (so that you can easily edit those as well) it would be VERY nice - and now to the question: Does anyone know of a suitable PC program that can assist in designing a boardgame? Because so far I have not been able to find anything. Any kind of help or suggestion will be appreciated - also including - how do you do it? Re: Drawing/Design of a boardgame on a PC, which program to If your board is 'rectangular' in basic layout (think Roborally, Ricochet Robots, Auf Heller und Pfennig, Fearsome Floors, Euphrat & Tigris, Wiz War, Carcassonne, Shear Panic, etc) you may want to use Excel to help with the groundwork and mechanics. Obviously not for production graphics. But for working out mechanics, playtesting, and play-by-email (which I expect you'll be doing a lot of if your co-designer is afar). Obvioulsy, this isn't quite so hot an option for hex-based games or map-based games. Asa for the actual graphics. Well, if budget is a concern, GIMP is free and good enough for most purposes. I use the following: MS Publisher - for the rulebook and diagram-like drafts Paint Shop Pro - for the production graphics If you've got access to it, MS Visio is even better for drawing diagrams if you want to create quick and dirty board layouts. Yes to all the above. Visio is the most useful if you want to create objects, move them around easily and overlay them with little hassle and snap things to virtual graphpaper while designing BUT artwork needs to be edited in a different program and then inserted as a block. MS publisher is slightly less user friendly geared towards pamplets and newletters but works pretty well. It's more difficult to make that perfect 1.75' hexagon (the same goes here as well, edit your artwork elsewhere). Both of these start to create really big files really fast as you start inserting graphics so be sure to have a good file compression utility to go with them. I prefer Paint Shop Pro but I also have Photoshop for things that PsP doens't do as well. I agree that Excel works in a pinch to create square board layouts but it would be a last resort for me. Re: Drawing/Design of a boardgame on a PC, which program to Click on my personal data and look through my graphical posts. I use Photoshop (well it scares me too much at present so I'm using the far simpler PaintShopPro) and a beautiful vector graphics program called Xara X. If you can still get hold of it DO. I will be more than happy to answer mails and pass on the little I know. I do all my photo editing and painting graphic work in PaintShoPro and ALL my assembly of items in Xara X. The Merchant of Venus Board is a back scan of the original board stars and planets, but EVERYTHING else is drawn or touched up in Xara X or PSPro. Good luck and the best advice is persevere and you do improve the more you do it (thats the only thing that keeps me going). I'm working on an Egypt themed resource game (trying not to reinvent Amun-Re) and I'm just starting to draw up play pieces as the concept for them becomes fixed. ![]() ![]() ![]() Oct 01, 2016 How to Make Your Own Board Game. I've drawn less regular map and board structures in inkscape without difficulty. To give a sense of comparison, that last map for Romania took me approximately 3 hours to draw from blank file to the relatively clean version you see there, and that includes quite a bit of faffing about and other trial and error for some parts. From the classical board game designs to the moderns ones. Free Game Board Template. Bingo Game Board Templates. Rules I keep in a simple text file, rules.txt, and later transcribe and import into LaTeX for the final version (). LaTeX is a wonderful tool, especially under Lyx (). Cards I define in a label printing program, one card per label. Typically they are simply plain text. The labels are then printed on plain paper stock, cut and slipped into MtG card protectors for playtesting. The whole collection of files relevant to a given game is then kept in a version control system. I use Bazaar-NG (), but you could use Subversion or CVS as easily. File exchange among partners then just becomes a question of collaborative development of the files in the version control system, checking out files, editing them, checking them back in etc. Apart from the general good advice to use version control when in a collaborative effort (I prefer Subversion), I think it all really depends on your working style and what kind of game you are trying to produce. For something hex or tile-based I would strongly recommend Campaign Cartographer, which creates any kind of freeform, tiles, squared, hexed maps very easily. It has the added bonus that it comes with a large graphics library and several expansions. I think you should check the licensing for these, if you are aiming for a published product. For prototyping this will do nicely though. This also allows you to link other maps and text files to your maps and designs, so it becomes rather easy to attach editing or design notes. There is also the Open Source Photoshop-like program 'Gimp', which might work well alongside Inkscape. Yep, I like and use The Gimp as well, just fairly rarely. For the sorts of games I'm interested in vector graphics is pretty much all I need, and in the particular case of prototyping I'd argue that vector graphics is all you'll ever need. Prototypes are for mechanical testing, not production quality analysis. If however you're into the whole art aspect then poducts like The Gimp are hard to argue with. The Gimp is certainly a competent and useful bitmap editor. Re: Drawing/Design of a boardgame on a PC, which program to if you're unwilling or incapable of using professional design software, don't compromise with some crappy word processing program. Trying to draw with word is like using a bar of soap for a hammer. Instead, go back to the perfect tools for this sort of thing: pencil and paper. This tools have no learning curve, are very affordable and available nearly everywhere. If you need to send images by email, you can digitize them with a scanner or digital camera. Both can save in the jpeg file format, which in turn can be viewed with any browser. (i'm not familiar with the open source applications, they may be fun to play with). Re: Drawing/Design of a boardgame on a PC, which program to I use a combination of Photoshop, word, excel, illustrator - you name it. For testing of dice-systems and checking math I write sims in Java and so on. Photoshop is good for prepping artwork, especially lineart to computer-color. Word is good obviously for basic sheets of rules Excel I find very handy for making up chits and a lot of simple game cards. Clunky, true, but. Adequate Illustrator is very good for making cards, because you can separate things. However, I find that when you have a full page of cards made up, it starts to get hard to grab and work with things. ![]() Welcome to Gamesfree.ca, the source of incredible, and. Then go around the room, having each person state their name and the funniest Christmas presents they ever received. As players announce their gifts, write down whether you believe it is true or not next to their name. The person who guesses the most correct answers is the winner. Example There are eight of you at the party. You write down everyone's names, then a blank line next to each name. John goes first, saying his worst presents he received are an empty box, a worn pair of shoes and tickets to the broadway show CATS. Everyone writes down what they believe is the lie. Then it's Amy's turn. Then Matt's turn, etc. Go around the circle until you have something written down for everyone. Once your list is full, have each go around the room saying which was their lie. ![]() When you get it right, put a check mark next to it on your list. Whoever gets the most checkmarks is the winner. Description One player, the answerer, picks a Christmas themed object but does not reveal this to others in the game. ![]() All other players ask the answerer questions which can be answered by a simple 'Yes' or 'No'. If 20 questions are asked by the players without the correct guess ever being found, the answerer has stumped the question-askers and gets another round, this time with a new object. For the answerer, stump contestants by picking a hard-to-guess Christmas object. For the questioners, ask questions that accurately narrow down the possibilities so they can guess the object. Example Answerer chooses the Christmas Tree. Questioners ask 'Is it brown?' Answerer responds 'No.' Questioners ask 'Is it green?' Answerer responds 'Yes.' Questioners ask 'Is it a Christmas Tree?' Answer responds 'Yes.' Questioners have won the game on the third question. Description The objective of the game is to be the first to get Four of a kind (ex. Four Aces or four Kings.) Once you do, take a candy cane as stealthily as possible. Then as soon as the first person takes the candy cane, it's a race to see who can grab the remaining candy canes the fastest. The person who doesn't get a candy cane is eliminated from the next round. Do this until one winner remains. Example For an example, let's say you have six people. First, select a dealer and have him or her pass out four cards to each player. Now that you have five players (remember, someone needs to be a dealer), you'll place four candy canes in the middle of the table. Have the dealer continually give out cards until one person gets four of a kind. When that happens, the person will take a candy cane. Now the remaining four people need to race to get the three remaining candy canes. One person won't get one. Now the five players will then be shortened to four. Then four players will be shortened to three; three shortened to two; two shortened to one winner. Description Write down of Christmas carols on separate game cards and divide players into teams. Each person on the team draws from the pile of cards, then has one minute to illustrate the Christmas carol. If the team guesses correctly, they get one point. Go until the first team reaches twenty points. Example Team member draws a picture of bells with sound coming from them. The team starts singing Jingle Bells. After about five to ten seconds when everyone on the team is singing, the host gives a thumbs up and it's time to move on. Another team member then starts drawing the Earth and people smiling. Someone on the team starts singing Joy to the World, until everyone else on the team catches up. The team that gets every member to draw a picture, and successfully guess the song, wins. ![]() Description First, print out this of Christmas terms to act out. Then separate everyone into teams, getting one person from each team to do the acting. Similar to regular charades, the actors are not allowed to talk or make signals of any letters. Every time a team guesses a correct charade, they get one point. The first team to get twenty points wins the game. Example You're in a group of sixteen people. You split into four teams, with four people on each team. On your team, one person acts out the term 'chimney' until your team guesses correctly. Once you guess correctly, your team gets one point, and the next person on your teams acts out a new Christmas term. Go until the first team reaches twenty points. Description Print, then hand out a copy to all your participants. Have each person fill out the form, then pass it back to the middle after completing the form. Now shuffle the forms and pass them out to random people. If the person get's their own form, it's okay. Have each person now read aloud the form in their hand. Whatever form gets the most laughs is the winner. Example Let's pretend you have twelve people. Each person will get a copy of that form. They'll take a few minutes to fill it out, then pass back to the middle. You'll shuffle the forms, then everyone will grab one. Go in a circle with each person reading the form out loud. After you read all of the forms, determine which one was the funniest, as that form wins! Description Draw eight Christmas images (ex. Christmas tree, Santa, snow, etc), then make duplicates of each, so you'll have a total of sixteen cards. Now place cards on the table as a 4x4 layout. Each player gets a chance to pick a card, then try to find the match. When a player finds the match, they get to keep it and it counts as a point. Play until the first person gets twenty points (this will take multiple rounds). You can adjust the scoring as dependent upon the number of participants. Example Let's say after turning over Santa as your first card, you turn over a card with a snowman on it. Since they don't match, turn the cards back over and it's the next person's turn. Now that person turns over the same Santa card, then also finds the Santa match. They get to keep the Santa match and counts as one point. Since they found a match, they get to go again. If they don't find a match, it's the next persons turn. Do this until the first person gets to twenty points. Description Players are broken up into teams. Each team is asked a holiday-themed question from, which includes survey responses to holiday-themed questions. Each team gets three guesses which they write on a piece of paper and hand to the judge. The judge then reveals if their guesses were on the list and the resulting points. If their answer is the number one ranked result, they get 50 points. If it's number two, they get 40, and so on. Players go through the list of questions until they reach the end, where points are tallied. The winning team is the one with the most points. The goal of the game is to accumulate more points than the opposing team through superior Christmas knowledge. Example Judge asks the question 'Name something you hang on a Christmas Tree.' Team 1 answers lights, ornaments, and a star. Team 2 answers lights, ornaments and an angel. The top answers were lights, 25% of respondents, ornaments, 23% of respondents, and angel, 10% of respondents. Team 1 is awarded 90 points for getting the top top answers, but missing the third. Team 2 is awarded 120 points for getting all three answers correct. Description Print out of lyrics and song titles. You'll then write down the list of lyrics for each person (or you can divide into teams, which we suggest), then have each person (or team) guess the song title. Whomever guesses the most correct answers wins. Example You're divided into teams of four. The game leader says these lyrics,'To go gliding in a one-horse open sleigh.' Each team now has two minutes to guess the song title. After the game leader reveals this is from Jingle Bell Rock, the team(s) who guessed correctly win. Play until the first team gets to twenty points. Description Split into teams, then setup a relay course (you can simply set up two cones, or be more creative and include obstacles). You'll then have the first person put an ornament on their spoon, go around the course, then come back to the next person. However, you CANNOT use your hands when passing off the ornament, as it must be passed from one spoon to the next. If you drop the ornament in the process, that person needs to go around the course again. Once the ornament is successfully passed off, it's the next person's turn. Example You have a total of 24 people, separated into six different teams of four people. Someone says, 'GO!' And the race begins. You run around the obstacle course, then come back and pass the ornament to the next person. That person goes around the obstacle course, goes to pass the ornament, but drops it. That person has to go around the course again. On their second try, they successfully pass the ornament. The first team to get all four players around the course wins. Description Separate your group into teams of four (you can have an unlimited amount of teams). For each team, you'll then set up cones 15 to 25 feet apart. The first player starts off putting a balloon between their knees and waddling down to the cone, just like a penguin, and back. When the team member returns, the person must pass the balloon to the next team member before they can go. The first team to have all four members complete the relay wins. But if any team member drops the balloon, they have to restart back at the beginning! Example You have five teams of four each, for a total of twenty people. The first member of each team gets a balloon between their legs until someone yells, 'GO!' You'll race down to the cone, turn around and come back, then pass the balloon off to the next person. The team to have all members complete the course wins. Description First, you need to draw (or print out a picture) of Rudolph, then get a piece of paper that's a red circle. Now you'll blindfold the person who is pinning the nose of Rudolph, spin them in a circle, then have them try to pin the nose on Rudolph. Whoever pins the nose closest, wins. Example If there are eight of you playing this game, you'll each get a turn. Whoever sticks the nose closest to where it needs to go is the winner. To extend the game a longer period of time, keep track of each winner, then play multiple rounds. The first person to win three rounds is the overall winner. You can adjust the number of rounds accordingly, depending on the number of participants. Description Line up everyone in a line, then place a limbo stick at a certain height. Let everyone try to limbo underneath (with their Santa belly) until every makes it through once. For the people that made it through, slightly lower the stick and have everyone go through again. Continually lower the stick until one winner remains! Example You have fifteen people. Have two people hold a stick on each end at 48' off the ground, letting the remaining thirteen try to limbo underneath. Only ten people made it through that round, so now you'll lower it to 45'. If three people made it through that round, lower to 40'. Now at this height, only one person made it through that round, so they are the winner! Description First, you need a host to put random things in a stocking. Once it's stuffed, tie a ribbon or string around the top of the stocking so that no one can peek. Sit in a circle and pass it around to everyone so they can feel what's inside. Give them note cards so that they can write down what their guesses are. The person who guesses the most correct answers wins. Example If you have a family of five, give everyone a chance to feel the stocking and guess what's in it. Then have each family member write down their guess. Whoever has the most correct guesses is the winner and gets the contents of the stocking. Description Best played in large groups, suggested 5 to 50 people, you simply need something to write with and post-it notes. Gather in a large circle, write down a famous Christmas character, then stick them on each others forehead. Everyone should have a post-it note on their forehead. Then each person needs to guess what character they are by asking other people yes or no questions. The goal is to not be the last person to correctly guess who they are. Example You write down Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, then put it on Tom's head. Tom now asks various people yes or no questions, trying to figure out who he is. He'll ask until he eventually figures it out. Continue to play until everyone guesses their name. Description First, grab some paper plates and something for everyone to write with. Blindfold the players and have them hold the paper plate on their head. Have one person call instructions while everyone else attempts to draw a Christmas scene onto the plate: • Draw a line as the floor • Draw a christmas tree and add a few decorations • Draw a star on top of your tree • Add two presents below the tree with bows on top • Draw a fireplace next to the tree • Add a three stockings on the fireplace, then draw a face on each one After everyone finishes drawing, have them take the plates off their head and look at their masterpiece. The point system goes: • 1 point: The star touches the tree • 1 point: The star is above the tree • 1 point: If your fireplace doesn't touch the tree • 2 points: The tree touches the floor • 2 points: The stocking touches the mantel • 2 points: If your present is under the tree • 3 points: If the bows on your present are on top of your present • 5 points: All three faces on the stockings are actually on the stocking (not hanging off the edge of the stocking) source. Description A scavenger hunt to find Santa’s friends is a great way to host a friendly game in which everyone wins. After collecting a variety of plastic elves and reindeers, you can hide them throughout the house. Some of Santa’s friends should be easy to find, just in case younger kids choose to play, whereas other items should be harder to find for the older kids. You can also opt out of using plastic and go for stuffed Christmas symbols instead. Each kid that finds one of Santa’s friends will receive a Christmas gift. You can also hide an extra amount of reindeer and elves so kids don’t feel left out. Example You hide plastic or stuffed Christmas symbols around the house, then shout “ready, set, go!” to send the kids off to find the toys. Once everyone finds a hidden toy, each kid will receive a Christmas gift. Description This stocking fill-up game involves a ton of candy and plays upon the traditional egg and spoon race game. You can form two teams of four kids and adjust this count based on how many kids will be attending your party. You can then place a Christmas stocking for each team on the other end of the room. The kids will then race to their respective stocking with a spoonful of candy and return to their area as the next team member carries more candy. The team that fills up their stocking first wins the entire game. In order to make this game less competitive, you can provide different prizes for all of the runner-ups and select the teams prior to the game so all ages are spread-out evenly. Example The green team stands in line until the game begins. Johnny is the first in line, so he runs to the stocking, gets a spoonful of candy, then runs back and tosses it in the green team’s stocking. The following team members follow Johnny’s lead and are the first to fill their stocking. The green team wins the game. Description If you’re looking for an active game, Gift Wrap-Up is the perfect activity for your adult party. You can select the teams before the game so guests are paired with someone that they may not know. Each duo will stand together with one person’s right hand tied to their teammate’s left hand. The team will then attempt to wrap a gift using wrapping paper, scissors, and tape. You can add a ribbon if you want to increase the difficulty of the competition and ask teams to make a bow. The team must work together to wrap the present and whichever team wraps the present first wins the game. Example Sally’s right hand is tied to Joe’s left hand leaving only one hand free for each of them. Once they decide that Sally will maneuver the scissors and tape, and Joe is in charge of the wrapping paper, the duo race the clock to wrap their present faster than their components. Although they are the second team to wrap their gift, the pair had a great time working together with the given limitations. Description Two truths and a lie is a classic party game that doesn’t require much work. You can transform this game into a Christmas edition and ask guests to come up with a total of three Christmas gifts. Two of the Christmas gifts must be gifts that the guest has actually received in the past whereas the third gift should be a lie. Participants will take their best try at guessing which Christmas gift is a lie. Example Rebecca says that she’s received a pair of skis, a goldfish and a snow globe for Christmas. Jessie guesses that Rebecca hasn’t received a goldfish for Christmas, but she’s wrong! Rebecca surprisingly has never been gifted a snow globe during the holidays. Description A gift stacking relay is a fun way to include all of your guests. This game includes a lot of laughter and hilarious moments as guests relay back and forth across a room with increasingly stacked gifts. This game requires a minimum of two teams, each consisting of ten participants. For each team, set up two tables that are about 20 feet apart and place five gifts or empty boxes on each table. Each team should have five members at each end of the two tables. The first team member will begin with one gift and carry it across the room to the other table. The second team member will stack a second gift onto the first gift and head back across the room to hand off their stack to third team member. The game ends once the winning team has successfully stacked and carried all 10 gifts across the room, without dropping any of course. If you have 30-40 guests, you can set up more tables and create additional teams of 10 as needed. Example Two tables are set up across from each other. Zoe runs to the opposite table to grab a Christmas present, then runs back to her team and passes it to Jeff. Jeff then runs to the opposite table and stacks a second gift on top of the one Zoe handed him. He then runs back to the table and his team members continue to repeat this process until the last member runs to their original table with 10 gifts stacked. Description This game requires only a little bit of movement and a lot of thought. First, gather a few sheets of paper that include the entire alphabet written vertically on each paper. Teams must then compete to fill in the entire alphabet list with a holiday word for each letter. The first team to complete their list wins. You can add a twist to the game by having someone check the winning team’s list and make sure the words qualify as holiday words. If their list isn’t accurate, you can then check another list from the second fastest team. Example Joe decides to be in charge of writing for the green team, so he writes the alphabet on a piece of paper from top to bottom. Once the clock starts, his fellow team members share Christmas-related words for him to add to the list. Once the list is completed and someone checks to make sure all of the words are related to the holidays, the green team is announced as winners. Description This game is easy and creative for any small to medium sized office party. Everyone stands in a circle as one team member begins a story with one sentence. Each team member verbally adds a spontaneous sentence to the growing story as the circle makes its way around. You’ll have plenty of laughter and a hilarious story by the time that the last person in the circle finishes their sentence. Example 'Starting with Joe, each colleague adds to the Christmas-related sentence to complete the thought. Joe: On one snowy evening, there was a knock on the door. Ryan.so a young girl opened the door only a crack to keep her dog in the house. Erin.but no one was there. The young girl only spotted a small package on the doorstep. Haley.but this wasn’t just any package. Annie.it was a very mysterious, large package. Harrison.and before she knew it. Fred.an enormous and colorful. Jan: T-rex popped out singing Jingle Bells at the top of his lungs. Description People bingo is an easy, fun, and effective way to increase conversation among team members at a holiday office party. In order to carry out this game, you must create a list of 10-15 traits or activities and give every participant the same list. Participants have to walk around the room and find other members who agree with items on the list and check them off. The winner is the person who fills in their list the fastest with a different employee name for each item. You can throw in a few holiday-oriented items to match the holiday atmosphere at your office. Example Jennifer refers to her given checklist and needs to find someone who has been skiing on Christmas day. After asking a few of her colleagues, she finds out that Jay from the accounting department goes skiing on Christmas day every year with his family. She checks off “Skiing on Christmas Day” on her list, and moves on to another one until her checklist is complete. Description Any game that involves decorating a family member provides for plenty of photograph opportunities at your Christmas party. This is a hilarious and fun game that calls for at least three family representatives to serve as figurative Christmas trees. A team will gather around each family tree representative and attempt to decorate them with different Christmas decorations provided for the game. You can give the three participants oversized green fabric to wear over their clothes prior to decorating. The best “Human Christmas Tree” wins the game, determined by the elders at your party. Example Jeff, Danielle and Matt use Kelsey as their human Christmas tree and wrap her in tinsel, lights, wrapping paper and plush ornaments. Description This is the perfect game to play with your Church group and ignite the memory of your members. You can play a jeopardy game that’s filled with bible verses from various parts of the bible, including any verse involved with the birth of Jesus Christ. Members can divide into two teams and do their best to name where each verse can be found in the bible. Example Matthew chooses Jesus Christ bible verses for 400. The question is “Where does ‘Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel’ appear in the bible?” Matthew says, “What is Isaiah 7:14.” Matthew wins 400 points for his team. Description If you have outgoing members in your church group, this game is perfect for your Christmas gathering. Bible Replay involves dividing members into at least two teams and giving each group a bible scene or a verse to act out. The teams only have 15 minutes to put together a skit before acting out their scene. You can have a small panel of 3-4 judges decide who the winner is after each team performs their skit. Example A team of 10 people put together the nativity scene as best they can with the given 15 minutes. After presenting to the audience, the judges reveal that they are the winners. Inclusion is key Make sure that you plan a game that includes everyone so that no one feels left out at your party. If there is a wide age range, feel free to modify the rules to apply to the younger kids so they can engage in the game as well. Explain the rules and provide examples In order to refrain from anyone getting confused, make sure that you provide a simple explanation of the game to the group. It’s even better if you can choose a few children to act out the first round of the game as an example. That way, the Christmas game will run smoothly from the start. Prioritize high activity games The kids will most likely arrive to your party full of energy. It’s best if you can hold a few high activity games towards the beginning of the party so that they are relaxed when it’s time to unwind and eat. Be prepared for a mess Make sure you have cleaning supplies on standby at your kid-friendly Christmas party. No matter what plans you have for the party, you can expect that the kids will make a mess when they are together. To avoid anyone slipping or a major clean up at the end, keep a few paper towels and wipes on hand for the unexpected spillage. Prizes and gifts Kids may become upset if they don’t go home with a Christmas goodie bag like the other kids. In the spirit of the holidays, one way you can resolve this issue is by providing prizes to the winners and small gifts to all who participated. What to Do For Christmas Party Games in Large Groups Arranging the perfect game for large groups can become a bit hectic. However, Christmas party games such as the that involve large groups can be quite memorable as long as everyone feels included. The best games for large groups should always involve teams in order to reduce chaos and confusion. You can also choose a list-oriented game if you’re looking to save time on buying props or materials. When planning your large Christmas party game, use these tips to keep your guests entertained. What to Do For Office Holiday Party Games If your company is having a holiday party at the office, you can gather everyone for a quick and fun game to liven up the office atmosphere. Holiday office party games should be appropriate and simple, as well as limited in time since most office parties only last a few hours. Since the location is an office, you should play a game that isn’t too competitive and doesn’t need any. You should also consider the personality of your office and be mindful of different religions. It is always best to opt for a “Holiday Party” instead of a “Christmas Party” when planning an office party during the holiday season. Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind when planning a office holiday party. Choosing the perfect office party game An office holiday party is a chance for colleagues to celebrate the past year of hard work while using the time to get to know each other outside of their daily tasks. That said, make sure you choose a game that allows for the staff to learn tidbits about their colleagues that they most likely wouldn’t learn during work hours. Create versatile teams Pair up different departments that don’t usually work together to encourage coworkers to get to know each other. Changing up the usual groups will bring the office together. ![]() Play the Cradle of Rome series and bring the vast city of the Ancient World to life!
